The Lake Trout, also known as Mackinaw, is not as brightly colored as other trout. It is dark gray or gray-green towards the top with a light gray or white belly with cream or light yellow spots over the body, head and tail. It also has a deeply forked caudal fin. Males develop a dark lateral line on their sides during spawning season.
The Lake Trout can grow up to 44” long and weigh up to 30 pounds.
Brown trout offer a great amount of variation in body coloration and spotting and survive in almost all cool water aquatic environments. The US has been home to several former world records although they are a non native species in the US.
The brown trout is a medium-sized fish, growing to about 44 pounds and a length of about 39″.
Rainbow trout are so called because they may have a very distinct red or pink lateral line. Rainbow trout are very similar to brown trout in terms of their feeding habits, taking mostly invertebrates on or below the surface of the lake. Their primary diet of river flies is supplemented by terrestrial insects or other fish. Their lifecycle is also very similar except that, in the wild, rainbows will usually spawn in the spring.
The Rainbow trout average about 20” to 30” long and around 8 pounds, but can grow as long as 4’ and weigh up to 53 pounds

Shout out to Captain Chris Ditter, business owner of Sierra Fin Addicts. My family and I had a great fishing experience with Captain Ditter this past Sunday, 6/7/26. A brisk early morning out on the lake, being able to enjoy a beautiful sunrise and taking in the snow cap mountains all along while catching fish. During our time with Chris, he was giving us a tutorial about the whole lake and the beauty of it. That evening our family enjoyed the fish we caught. The fish was so delicious. An amazing time and experience I won't forget and look forward to going back out!
